GEOGLYPHS: THE LINES OF NASCA |

The famous Nasca Lines cover an area of 480 square kilometers, and can be seen from the air from small single-engine planes. The Nasca geoglyphs are the most beautiful and impressive in the world, yet their true meaning to the ancient Nasca people has been lost to the immense desert sands.

Just 2 km beyond Cahuachi is the ceremonial site of Estaquería, where one sees the remains of thick poles made of tree trunks that once supported the roof of a large temple.

The ancient farmers of Nasca occupied one of the driest places on earth, so to irrigate their fields they developed an ingenious hydraulic system that tapped underground sources of water. They built marvelous filtration galleries that are still in use to the present day. |

The religious world of the great Nasca Civilization was centered around the immense ceremonial center called Cahuachi. The largest theocratic city in the world, it included 38 temple pyramids. |

Ancient cemeteries of all prehispanic time periods are abundant in the valleys of the Nasca region. The most spectacular of these is Chauchilla, located 27 km south of the town, and easily accesible.

MARINE RESERVE OF SAN FERNANDO |
|
One of the few untouched places left on the south coast. It is a spectacular landscape with abundant marine flora and fauna, including thousands of sea lions, Humboldt penguins, and condors. A very special place. |

PAMPA GALERAS VICUÑA RESERVE |
|
High in the Andes, yet only an hour from Nasca, is the largest population of vicuñas, wild cousins of the llama and alpaca. Hunted nearly to extinction in the early 20th century for their fine wool, their numbers have rebounded due to the creation of this wildlife preserve. |
